Sardinia is an Italian island region roughly three hundred miles off the west coast of mainland Italy. It is approximately the size of the state of New Hampshire. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and it is know for its beautiful beaches and rugged terrain. Due to the rugged terrain, farming is mainly limited to the southern provinces. Shepherds are a common site in Sardinia, and there is an estimated 6 million sheep on the island. Sardinia is best known for being a "blue zone". This term describes areas in the world with high percentages of centenarians (ages 100+) and super-centenarian (ages 110+). Sardinia has one of the highest life expectancies in the world.

Sardinia is one of five autonomous regions in Italy. Italy granted Sardinia some form of autonomy following World War 2. Sardinia has its own language and is fiercely independent. Most Sardinians consider themselves Sardinians before Italians. There are two official languages Italian and Sardu (native language). There are around 5 dialects of Sardu spoken on the island.
